It is not a simple one-day exercise if the purpose is governance or building guardrails. However, when the purpose is to make the future more plausible, i.e., easier to see how the vision can become reality, it can be done in shorter time frames when properly facilitated. The journey of backcasting is iterative and needs skilled facilitators, as with all foresight methods. Backcasting requires skills related to strategy, problem-solving, and, most importantly, the ability to iteratively move from the long to the medium to the short term to consider guardrails necessary for anticipatory governance.
